Rob Morrell succumbs in the 90s as the bar bill looms large
A Great Bromley team that had clearly been watching too much IPL cricket elected to bat and went off at a pace that would have kept the Chennai Super Kings happy. A positive approach (slogging) got the better of a bit of youthful inexperience at the beginning of the innings, which was brought slightly more under control later on by some guile and craft from the more aged (decrepit) bowling practitioners. The short boundary though left some cause for optimism in the Kelvedon camp yet Mick Warner's untimely demise and the quick dispatch of Mal Wilde through a rather generous piece of umpiring set the tempo back. Rob Morrell though bided his time and built an innings based on clever shot selection punishing the bad ball, though once again, obviously with an eye on the bar bill he succumbed in the 90's. With a few cameos to support him the score was lifted above 200 and 5 batting points were secured.

Rye Mill lane thriller ends in Victory for Kelvedon
Over 500 runs were scored on a belter of a wicket. Abberton set a stiff target of 252-5 built on the back of a strong opening partnership of 134 between Gallant and White. The two Kelvedon spinners debut making Geoff Alcoe and Joshua King then bowled with a good deal of control taking 4 wickets between them keeping the target down to a manageable level, backed up by a good all round fielding performance, the highlight of which was a direct hit run out by James Bonvini. At the tea break the general viewpoint was that the game was going to be a close one.

Experienced openers Neil Brice and Rob Morrell got the innings underway with a partnership of 81 as they gradually pushed the run rate up with Rob Morrell getting to 49, but the real momentum the innings needed was delivered by 16 year old wicket Keeper Lee Scott who fired off a range of shots all round the wicket in a high tempo 83, he was given great support by 15 year old Will Shortridge who thumped drive after drive straight down the ground on his way to a hard hit 31. Kelvedon entered the last 8 overs needing to score at 8 an over, the rate was maintained with a few lusty boundary hits and sensible running.

However, the loss of Lee Scott in the penultimate over left Kelvedon needing 3 runs to win as they entered the last over with thoughts of last year’s tied game between the two sides beginning to emerge- the growing nerves though were, stabilised as Joshua King struck 4 through extra cover off the 2nd ball of the final over to win the match for Kelvedon 253-5.

Wednesday 5 May Elmstead U12 H 1800
Kelvedon 89 for 9; Elmstead 63 for 8. KFCC won by 26 runs.
Kelvedon U12s start with 26 run win
The Under 12's had an excellent start to the season with a 26 run win against Elmstead.

Batting first Kelvedon scored 89 for 9 against some good bowling.

The highlights were 28 not out from Stanley Challenor and 15 from Eddie King.
All of the Kelvedon batsmen looked for singles and ran well between the wickets against a deep set field.

Tight bowling saw us restrict the visitors to 63 for 8.
Two wickets for Oscar Butcher and one each for Joe Curnick, Stanley Challenor, Will Newman and Eddie King.
Good fielding accounted for two run outs and two excellent catches.

A very encouraging start and we look forward to the next match away at Colchester.

Friday 7 May Woodham Mortimer Ladies H 1800
Kelvedon & Feering 131 for 4 bt Woodham Mortimer 69 for 4 by 62 runs
Saturday 8 May Lakenheath TC3 A 13:00
Match cancelled - Rain
Morrell and Bellamy save the day!
The 1st XI set off with great optimism for Lakenheath, spurred on by the fact that despite the steady rain in Essex 'it was dry and fit to play in Lakenheath'.

The convoy set off and promptly went in three different directions, all of which proved to be a slow route to the end of nowhere! Picked for his driving ability (motor not cover!), Morrell managed to cage a lift of the senior Pro and save a large fuel bill.

We arrived in the rain but were reassured by the 'groundsman' (clad in full polar expedition gear) assuring us that despite the falling rain the pitch was not getting wet!

Much debate about invisible covers and rain falling sideways and missing the pitch!

Two hours later and with the rain still falling the old heads of Morrell and Bellamy proved their worth to the side with a great partnership. Rejecting the 'Best Mexican snack bar' and two rather dodgy looking Chinese takeaways, a Chippy was found and once the language barrier was broken a fine array of hot food was purchased.

Once fed the team were finally able to tear themselves away from the excitement which is Lakenheath on a wet Saturday in May and find three more different and equally slow routes home. Fuelled by the chips we were able to watch the 'its too far to Lakenheath brigade' enjoy a fine win at Kelvedon.

Look out for next weeks report featuring the 'its too far to Mildenhall All Stars'!
Saturday 8 May Hadleigh II TC5 H 13:00
Kelvedon & F. II (18pts) 161-7 Hadleigh II* (6pts) 160-7 Kelvedon & F. II won by 3 wickets
Bowlers hold the key as Burt and Wild lead successful run chase
A miserable cold day ended on a high note as Kelvedon and Feering 2's profited from the performance of its teenage bowling attack who held the experienced Hadleigh batting line up in check, after a flying start given to the Hadleigh innings by Abdul who reached 50 before being run out after 14 overs.

James Bonvini 6-0-19-0; Will Shortridge 6-0-21-0; Joshua King 10-0-41-1; Harry Bell 5-0-29-4 all bowled with good control in the second half of the innings. On a good surface a total of 160-7 looked low.

Whilst Kelvedon lost wickets throughout the chase, early momentum given to the innings by Mal Wilde 49, ensured that Kelvedon were always comfortably up with the rate required, and Ross Burt coming it at 4 was able to play a well paced innings as he increased his momentum on the way to a match winning 60. A wobble on 158 saw 2 wickets fall but in the end the victory was secured with 6 overs to spare.

Thursday 20 May Coggeshall U12
Coggeshall beat Kelvedon by 21 runs
Despite losing there were many positives to take from our latest U12 game.
Bowling first we soon reduced Coggeshall to 19 for 4 with Eddie taking two wickets in his first over and one each from Joe Curnick and Stan Challenor.
Despite two wickets from James Grimley, Coggeshall recovered to end with 80 for 8.
The Kelvedon fielding was excellent with some good catches and great ground fielding. A special mention must go to Toby Newman (under 9) making his debut and fielding brilliantly at fine leg, ably supported with a relay throw by his brother Will.
Batting second Sam James and James Grimley made a solid start but found scoring difficult against some tight bowling. James top scored with 19 and some good shots down the order saw us finish on 59 for 6. All round a good performance with the main difference between the sides been Kelvedon game everyone at least one over whilst Coggeshall concentrated on their main 6 bowlers.

Saturday 22 May Witham II TC5 A 13:00
Kelvedon & Feering II 243-7, Witham II 228-8
Disciplined bowling sees Kelvedon & Feering home.
On the hottest day of the year, Kelvedon elected to bat and although they suffered the early loss of opener Mick Warner to the 5th ball of the innings the top order took to its task well and a significant score was built, with Lee Scott scoring 47, Mal Wilde 68 and Ross Burt controlling the last 15 overs with a well paced 52 not out to ensure 90 were scored off the last 10 overs, taking the total to 243-7.

With the wicket playing well it looked set for a tight finish on a beautiful evening. Witham got off to an excellent start getting to 101, scored at 6 an over before they lost their first wicket. Gradually though the run rate was pegged back by 20 year old seamer Dan Saunders and teenage leg spinner Joshua King. However, the second wicket didn’t fall until 161 had been scored and with Witham needing 90, from 15 overs to win, they looked slight favourites. The loss though of Rainsley who had scored 79, bowled by Joshua King, changed the perspective and with both bowlers keeping things tight the run rate started to climb and wickets started to fall, with the skipper even holding a juggling catch on the run in the deep. The tight grip on scoring continued and the spells of the two young bowlers swung the match the way of Kelvedon. Dan Saunders taking 3-67 off 15 overs and Joshua King 3-61 off 15 overs, as Witham fell 15 runs short at 228-8.

Lightening start but rains prevent more than 18 overs
Some of the fastest running seen at Kelvedon since the Warner twins were in their youthful prime, represented the main talking point from the 18 overs that proved possible with 15 and 16 year old openers Sam King (40) and Lee Scott (58 no) putting on 105 for the first wicket in just 16 overs. Then the rains came with the score 115-1.

Kelvedon won by 5 wickets
Solid display sees the inaugural TC5 match on the new ground christened with a victory
It was a very murky day but at least the rains from Saturday held off, as a fairly youthful Kelvedon side elected to field first and the young bowling attack, several of whom had been part of an attack that conceded 303 to Great Bromley on the first day of the season responded well to the challenge set. They never allowed the Great Bromley side the chance to inject momentum into the innings, Oliver Coe 7-2-16-2 and Richard Wilson unfortunate with 7-0-24-0 started well and then Dan Saunders 8-1-33-2 and Joshua King 12.1-3-45-4 applied real pressure to the middle overs of the innings as the Great Bromley batting faltered. It was left to the youngest member of the attack 14 year old Tom Potter 5-0-28-2 to finish off the innings which ended 5 overs short at 138 all out, the score may have been less if the catching had been better, although wicket keeper Patrick Ahern put in a great display with 4 catches and a stumping.

The conditions were helping the bowlers so Kelvedon needed a good start to their reply to ensure that pressure did not grow during the chase. Opener Mick Warner who reached 40 set the momentum the innings needed, by scoring off any loose deliveries that came his way. Fellow opener Ashley Griffiths gave a gritty display whilst never really timing the ball in his first outing of the season, ensuring that the first 13 overs were negotiated without the loss of a wicket. The score had reached 57 when the first wicket fell. In total 5 wickets were to fall but the start meant that the victory never really seemed in doubt as runs were accumulated steadily. Ben West came in at 7 to strike two 4’s in a good 13 not out on his debut for the TC5 side as a 5 wicket victory was secured.
Monday 31 May High Roding MatchPlay H
KFCC won by 1 wicket. High Roding (batted first) 192 for 7 in 40 overs (E Clark 3-37). Kelvedon & Feering 193 for 9 in 39.4 overs (L Scott 42 & S King 41*)
King and Bradshaw steer Kelvedon to 1 wicket victory
The clash of the two top teams in group 2 ended in a thriller. Josh Parsons won the toss and elected to bowl and the decision seemed justified when High Roding slumped to 46-4 through the fiery pace of Shaun Bragg and Ed Clark. The later picking up 3 wickets and regularly had the batsman hopping about the crease. High Roding then recovered to reach 192 in their 40 overs, as Kelvedon lost focus with the ball. In response Kelvedon lost two early wickets before Lee Scott (42) and Josh Parsons (22) got the team back on track. But then they both fell in quick concession and left James West (26) and Sam King to get the team back on the trail for victory. West was brilliantly caught and bowled when the team required 6 an over through the last 10 overs, leaving a nervous feel amongst the players. Wickets regularly fell, but with quick fire runs coming from the low order as well. Throughout all of the aggresive running and strokes stood one batsman, Sam King, who almost single handed took the team to victory with a magnificent unbeaten 41. But the winning runs came from the number 11, Rob Bradshaw, who entered the action in the penultimate over, calmly clipping the ball of his legs on a couple of occasions through mid wicket, to win the game with two balls remaining. The 1 wicket victory leaves Kelvedon and Feering top of Group 2 in the matchplay, four points ahead of nearest rivals.

James Baker unbeaten on a superb 155 as KFCC beat Gidea Park & Romford
Kelvedon & Feering batted lost the toss and were put into bat. The openers Oliver Parsons and James Baker built a solid start scoring 91 upto drinks at 20 overs. The first wicket fell at 149 when Oliver Parsons was dismissed for 59 at the other end James Baker continued scoring and accelerating the team run rate with shots all round the wicket reaching his 100. The Kelvedon innings closed at 287 for 6 from 40 overs with James Baker unbeaten on a superb 155. Gidea Park & Romford then batted and the Kelvedon bowlers and fielding kept it tight with accurate bowling and picking up wickets at regular intervals bowled out the home side for 122 in 35 overs and completing a 165 run win. The win maintains the unbeaten record and Kelvedon & Feering on course for qualification from the group.

Another win to keep up the 100% record to date in the matchplay
Josh Parsons lost the toss and Kelvedon were asked to bat first. The game was set up well as both teams went into this match unbeaten. The openers batted well, seeing off both Woodford Wells new ball bowlers, but were both dismissed by the first change bowlers. Josh Parsons and James West then started to increase the run rate and build a partnership before Parsons went for one big shot too many and was bowled for a quick fire 29. Whilst wickets fell steady, West remained at the crease, he managed to make a gritty 57, including 2 huge sixes. Having reached the psychological barrier of 200 we then proceeded by picking up wickets early in their chase. Shaun Bragg and Josh Parsons both picked up 2 early wickets whilst the ball was swinging and that put the game beyond doubt. A superb low diving catch from Lee Scott summed up the performance brilliantly. Ed Clark and Fuad Ahmed both picked up 2 wickets to cap off a superb bowling and fielding display, as Woodford Wells could only muster 105, giving Kelvedon and Feering a 99 run victory.

Saturday 19 June Boxted TC5 A 13:00
Boxted* (7pts) 192-9 Kelvedon & F. II (19pts) 194-6 Kelvedon & F. II won by 4 wickets
A competitive game played in pretty miserable conditions saw a youthful Kelvedon team triumph over a more experienced Boxted side
A controlled bowling performance from Kelvedon’s, largely teenaged attack, kept the Boxted team who at one point looked like they would threaten a score of 250 well in check. Tight spells from Will Shortridge 3-18 off 6 six overs and Joshua King 3-44 of 12 overs instigated a mini collapse in the final 15 overs of the Boxted innings. Earlier controlled spells from Tom Potter, Ollie Coe with 2 wickets and Stuart Johnson ensured early Boxted momentum was kept in check, only the captain returned below par figures! The bowlers were backed by a strong performance in the field with several good catches held, and the performance of James Balfour was noted for its enthusiasm. Only a late rally saw a Boxted score of 192-9 posted.

The Kelvedon response was all about the opening partnership as 15 year old Sam King and 16 year old Lee Scott put on 115 for the first wicket. Sam King fell for 34 in the 25th over, but Lee Scott continued to score at a very good rate before succumbing for an excellent 93. The firm base meant that although the later order wobbled the run chase was always very comfortable and although the game went to the penultimate over A comfortable victory was secured as Kelvedon reached 193-6.

Baker hits another ton to steer KFCC through to the quarters as Group Winners
Skipper Josh Parsons lost the toss on a hot afternoon at Harlow and Kelvedon were asked to bat first . The The openers J Baker and O Parsons laid the foundation for a big total, dispatching the ball at ease across the scorched outfield. In the 12th over after a 75 run opening partnership Olly Parsons was caught on the boundary for 33. Runs continued to flow at a good rate and the the 3rd wicket fell at 247 when James Baker was out after scoring a superb 125 with classy shots all round the wicket. This 3rd wicket partnership of 140 with Lee Scott who also batted well further enhanced our position to post a large total. In the final overs we continued to score freely although we lost a few wickets, Lee Scott was run out of 67 and Ed Clark hit a quick 26. The innings closed at 317 for 9 off the 40 overs.

Harlow started off very positive and scored freely against the opening bowlers. The first change bowlers Fuad Ahmed and Rob Bradshaw then dismissed both Harlows openers in their first overs. Runs were still being scored at a good rate and Josh turned to his spinners J Baker and O Parsons. Wickets then continued to be taken at regular intervals with some excellent catching from P Geddis followed up by Josh Parsons taking a smart reflex catch at slip. The spinners picked up 6 wickets between them Olly Parsons 4 and James Baker 2 and the final wicket was taken with Harlow on 218 in the 36th over giving Kelvedon a 99 run victory maintaining our 100 per cent record in the group played 8 won 8, which also means we are group winners giving us a home tie in the quarter final on Monday 2nd of August. We have one more group game next Sunday 18th July at Home against Barking.

100% campaign complete in runs fest
Kelvedon wrapped up their 9th win out of 9 games in group 2 to finish comfortably top with a stunning batting performance against a 3rd placed Barking. The Kelvedon openers, Oliver Parsons and James Baker, strode out to the crease in fine form and the form continued with a magnificent 154 run partnership. James Baker was dismissed via a brilliant bit of fielding to run him out, in the 22nd over for a elegant 92 from 70 balls, and his partner Oliver Parsons played anchor for a gritty 43. As the pair fell in quick concession, it left Josh Parsons and James West the perfect platform to play some extravagant strokes in a quick fire 98 run partnership. Josh Parsons mustered 57 from 38 balls, while James also managed a rapid fire 45 from just 32 balls. The team lost wickets reasonably quickly from here on in, but there was still room for several more cameos, including a typical style Will Shortridge knock of 11 from 4 balls and an Ed Clark 25 unbeaten from just 13 balls. The team racked up 20 runs from the final over to take the total to 326, eclipsing the teams effort from last week, where Kelvedon scored 317.

With the pitch playing true it was always going to be difficult to stop the flow of runs. However Barking were always comfortably behind the rate. Some fierce pace from Shaun Bragg kept the batsman on their toes, and Fuad Ahmed cashed in with a couple of early wickets. Ed Clarks pace and bounce also proved tough to handle as he picked up 2 wickets, including a brilliant stumping from Lee Scott, who tested himself by standing up to the stumps. He took the ball above his head, from a back of the length ball from Ed and whipped the bails off in a flash, leaving the batsman still looking bemused as he trudged off to the pavilion. But the pick of the bowlers was James Baker, he bowled wicket to wicket off spin, occasionally giving the ball a little tweak. He picked up 4-30 in his 8 overs and probably secured himself back to back man of the match performances. The campaign has been a real credit to the club, as we have proven ourselves to be one of the strongest sides in the counties premier colt cricket competition.

The quarter final is the teams next task and this will be held at Kelvedon on Monday 2nd August, with a reserve date of Tuesday 3rd August.
