Dear All,
Although the summer season is now behind us, there is still a lot going on at KFCC in the close season.
One of the areas we want to address is that of sponsorship & funding hence this email. I know that many employers run community funding schemes that essentially make donations to voluntary bodies, like KFCC, that service their communities. Given the extent of the membership that we enjoy, it seemed logical to ask our members whether their employers run such schemes and if so, would you be prepared to make an application on behalf of KFCC. The Club, of course, can support applications with any necessary information. If you think you can assist then please let me know.
Aside from the ongoing operation of the club, funds are required for a number of initiatives including:
- Purchase of kit and equipment for the Colts
- Repairs to the Nets
- Purchase of covers for the square
All of these items are extremely important to the continuing development of the club and our ability to provide Cricket to all ages.
We are also actively pursuing the sale of advertising around the ground in the form of banners around the pitch (of which they are already a few) and also a sponsor whose name would be displayed on the covers that we are looking to purchase. In this respect, the Club offers a prime location in that advertising can be seen from the main London to Norwich railway line and it requires little imagination to consider the potential audience given how many people pass the Club every day on the train. Again, if anyone has an interest in an opportunity like this, please let me know.
Thanks and regards
Nick, KFCC Coaching Team
We had a very good session putting the second square to bed today (after it had dried out a bit) and we did a bit of the hard work on the main square as a result of the enthusiastic team who turned up.
We are hoping that the weather will be favourable and that we will be able to scarify the main square on Friday in preparation for the top dressing on Saturday morning at 10.00 am. If anyone can make it for two to three hours we would be very grateful.
If anyone wants to take a look at the hedge on the second ground you will see that it is in the process of getting a short back and sides haircut. We are generating a huge pile of burnable brush and I reckon we will be able to keep a bonfire going from now till Christmas. If anyone is interested in helping to get this cleared up please could you call me to make a time. If we get a good enough fire going then a few hamburgers and sausages would cook really well on the embers!
Simon Gibbs (29/09/12)
Arthur Savill's funeral is now confirmed as 10th August 2:30pm at Kelvedon URC church and 3:45pm at the Crematorium Braintree for the committal. There will be tea after the Committal at Kelvedon and Feering Cricket Club.
Simon Gibbs
It is with great regret that we have to announce that Arthur Savill died on Saturday.
We have all been aware that Arthur suffered from poor health for a number of years but this did not diminish his support and interest in our club. Indeed he has been following the fortunes of the club visiting local grounds with his carer until very recently.
He and Joan (who died earlier this year) were intimately involved in the development of our club from its original ground in London Road to the "new" club at our current site. Along with their extended family they have been an important part of our community for a very long period.
The Club would like to pass on our deepest condolences to the family at this very sad time.

KFCC are proud to provide an update on the progress of one of our previous Jack Petchy Award winners Tom Griffiths. Further updates on other winners will be posted periodically.
Since winning the Jack Petchey award in 2009, Tom went on to achieve a Duke of Edinburgh award with cricket going towards the community and sporting elements. He has further gone on to study an MSc in Engineering at St Hugh's College, Oxford, achieving a distinction in his first 2 years and awarded an Academic Scholarship by St Hugh's College in recognition of this.
At University, Tom has become heavily involved in other non-academic activities. He has taken part in organising the 'Varsity Oxbridge Ski Trip' which took well over 3000 people to Val Thorens in France (the largest student run ski trip in the world). He has also created his own college Engineering society and lead it to becoming a recognised college society, receiving funding and publishing the society on an Engineering networking website. He has also become heavily involved in the sport of rowing for St Hugh's College Boat Club (SHBC), having achieved two 'Blades' rowing for the first boat. Blades are one of the highest accolades in Oxbridge College rowing for achieving four 'bumps' in four days in the bi-yearly Oxford college competitions. Tom will now have his name and weight carved into 2 oars mounted in the entrance hall to St Hugh’s College. He has also been part of the SHBC committee, holding several positions such as social secretary and development secretary (alumni relations & sponsorship). He is now The President of this society, pushing further the roles he's experienced in and further raising the profile of SHBC.

On behalf of Kelvedon and Feering Cricket Club I would like to say a few words to describe what Ted meant to the club and why he will not only be so sorely missed by his family, but also by the huge number of people whose lives he touched.
It is a very difficult task to describe Ted Smith. Rather like his favourite butterflies he used a lot of different guises and effortlessly moved from subject to subject but was always the same essential person underneath. He became a part of my life more than twenty years ago as a fellow parent of a keen cricketing child. While he did not seek to dominate the proceedings one always knew his views on the rights and wrongs of things. There are many young people who are playing cricket today because Ted helped and inspired them - but there are even greater numbers who have taken some life-long lessons in fairness and decency from the time they came under Ted's wing.
Many people go through their lives concentrating on a few things, knowing about their job, hobby and the football scores. Many of these people though, have experienced a humbling moment when they started chattering on at Ted about any one of a huge range of subjects only to hear Ted apply a minor correction to their discourse and then continue to describe what they were trying to say in chapter and verse. What made a conversation with Ted rather like a skate on thin ice was that he gathered information like burrs on your socks and then used it to explain what was happening in the world around us. It requires a deep thirst for knowledge and a refusal to accept second-best to have that gift. I believe he took a perverse pleasure in masquerading as "the plumber" who then pulled the rug from under pompous clients and colleagues by quietly asking if they knew the kind of bath that Homer would have had in his house.
How many times have we all stood on the boundary chatting to Ted about the game in progress and discovered that Ted knew exactly what the current opposition bowler/batsman was going to do, be it a ten year old or 60 year old. It is a matter of record that Ted was a very important part of the cricket club, putting a huge amount of time into organising colts' cricket and then supporting Ed as first team skipper. What is less well-known was that he also helped to institute the Magic Moment award which recognises some of the rather more off-beat performances. Many very dedicated cricketing youngsters were encouraged in their sport by Ted - but for those that wanted to, they also received a bonus of an appreciation of nature - and a quirky sense of humour. Did you see the Green Woodpecker over there? No? Well maybe he didn't want to stick around to watch your fielding ...... In fact I am sure there are a few brash lads out there still scratching their heads at some of the things Ted told them - was Bert Thripp really the inventor of sherbert-flavoured earwax?!
I am sure there are many amusing anecdotes that we will all share with each other over the next few hours and weeks which sum Ted up. A couple of you here today will remember a visit to the County Ground to watch cricket and collect autographs. Ted saw Keith Fletcher (at the time England Manager) stalking out of the shop squeezing past the two boys - rather than stop him and ask him to sign their books he waited till Keith was gone and then pointed out to the boys what they had just missed - keep your eyes open next time lads (perhaps they had been discussing West Ham’s latest on-field disaster or something)!
A protracted discussion always ensued if you asked Ted if he wanted a drink - what variety of yeast do they use in lager, why are those bottles that shape, do they use environmentally sustainable barley, why do you want the glass washer plumbed in over there - it was usually much easier to put the bottle of Guinness in front of him and then ask if he wanted a glass with it - answer always yes.
We will really miss Ted on quiz nights - how does one person manage to combine an encyclopaedic knowledge of nature, Greek poetry and 1950's music with a self-deprecating chuckle? Ever the optimist Ted linked up with Rosemarie, our kids and ourselves hoping to win but was always resigned to the fact that someone louder and less erudite would usually talk him out of the right answer! We also have a very hard act to follow in keeping the garden round the club looking so pretty and colourful, while at the same time protecting every insect and bird that lives in the area.
All of us here will desperately miss Ted within the club and in the wider community for his solid sense of what is right and the true value of each individual. I know that I will always have a "What would Ted have thought" moment before embarking on a project. He always put a question in front of you which sparked an interesting train of thought, albeit the quality of tap washers or the migration patterns of the cuckoo.
To Rosemarie, Philippa and Ed all of us would like to express our heartfelt sympathy on their loss. Apart from being a devoted husband and father, Ted was a true friend to all of us.
Simon Gibbs on behalf of Kelvedon & Feering Cricket Club
The next main committee meeting of the Club will take place on 18th June 2012; 7.15pm for 7.30pm in the Clubhouse, Rye Mill Lane, Feering.
Paul Lees, Club Secretary
Steering Committee
The club has formed a steering committee headed by two previous Petchey award winners, JoshParsons and Rhiannon Griffiths, to manage the nomination and selection of prospective award winners and to come up with ideas to which the awards can be put. Club coach Martin Griffiths, who knows all the young people is assisting the steering committee.
January/February winner - Stanley Challinor aged 14
Stanley has received his award for his general attitude and the example he sets both on and off the field during training and matches . He has just started to play adult cricket and displays the same level of enthusiasm to this longer form of the game.
March/April winner - James Grimley aged 14
James in common with the previous winner Stanley sets an exemplary attitude and plays the game in the right spirit always giving his best efforts whether it is agame or training session.
Stanley and James have decided to pool their awards and put the money towards a summer training camp for all the young players during the summer holidays. Two of our young coaches Rhiannon and Heather have volunteered to help a professional coach to deliver the camp.
May/June winner - Dan Saunders aged 22
Dan was nominated for all the extra commitment he has shown towards the club. He has made tremendous strides to improve his own game whilst at the same time volunteered to go on to the club committees as the young players representative. He has helped bringing new computing skills to the club.
Dan has decided his award should go towards funding a white back drop to the cricket nets. This will benefit the whole club and make the nets more user friendly.
Chris Leftwich, Chairman
I have now been given details of Ted Smith's funeral by his family to pass on to cricket club members.
The date is 13th June at 1.30pm at the Three Counties Crematorium, High Garrett and afterwards at the Cricket Club.
Rosemarie and the family have suggested that members may want to provide a plant for the club flowerbed in memory of Ted rather than flowers. Gillian Warner or Pippa Gibbs can be consulted if members need help with selection.
Simon Gibbs on behalf of the Committee of KFCC
Unfortunately nets are cancelled for tonight due to the heavy rain.
KFCC
I regret that I must tell you that Ted Smith has lost his battle with illness which has affected him for some time.
Many of you will know him as the person that first introduced you to cricket and Kelvedon and Feering Cricket Club. Others will not have known him but he was the person that kept the flower beds round the club in bloom each Summer and the unseen club member that did many other essential jobs.
He was a true club person and spent many hours supporting his son Ed who has been Captain of our first eleven for a number of years.
We have lost a valued personal friend of many people in KFCC.
The club committee would like to convey our sincere condolences to Rosemarie, Philippa and Ed and the rest of Ted's family on your behalf.
Simon Gibbs on behalf of the Committee of KFCC 23/05/12
Thankfully, the season is up and running and we have seen some cricket at the club!
I have had some enquiries about whether the club have any cricket clothing available, and the answer is that we do!
As I think Martin mentioned in an early season email, on the club website, there is a "Club Kit" link which takes you to http://www.surridgesport.co.uk/content/clubshops/kelvedon-feering-cc. This web site supplies the latest KFCC Logo'd match gear (white shirts, jumpers and trousers), plus a selection new club tracksuits, training tops & shorts. This latest range is available directly online from Surridge Sports at very reasonable prices.
Whilst not mandatory of course, it would be great if, as a club, we buy our future cricket clothing from these suppliers to enhance the professional look of the club at both training and at matches. The prices are very competitive with other cricket suppliers. The "Sizing" for colts is clearly stated under the “Garment Care” section on the top menu bar on the web site. Obviously, if you have any other questions regarding the clothing itself, please contact the Surridge shop by phone (who seem very helpful). Any other club related questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me.
Many thanks, Mal Wilde 23/05/12
Club Membership Renewal
Last weekend saw our first cricket of the season and hopefully the coming weekend will bring some more. This has been a really difficult time for the club which has lost a lot of revenue in probably the most weather effected start to the season I have ever experienced. There are some members still to renew their membership. Please can we encourage you to do so ASAP so we can get some cash flow into the club.
Pig Roast - 7th July
Please see below details of our Pig roast which will be held this year on 7th July including details of how to get tickets. It is a fun night and helps raise some money for the club. We look forward to seeing you there.
Cleaner - £10 per hour
Finally, we are still looking for a cleaner for the club. The club pays £10 an hour. Can anyone who is interested in the position please contact Paul Lees (01376 573111) for details
Many Thanks, Martin Griffiths 17/05/2012
Dear Member,
Please see link below to a message from our Chairman giving you some background on what we are currently doing as a club.
Chairman's message 2012
I hope you all have a great season.
Martin Griffiths
Unfortunately, we are still paddling around the KFCC pitches and it is not going to be possible to run training tonight or tomorrow night. On a positive note however, the prospects for the weekend are a lot better and there is a chance that we might be able to actually have some cricket.
Let's hope for some better weather soon...
Martin Griffiths
The Cricket Club did their usual job at the May Fayre – standing in the rain, smoke in the eyes, telling people we do not do cheese burgers. Somehow we managed to sell out of most things, bank some money for the Community Association and bank some goodwill for the club. Special thanks go to the West extended family (including Becks Wilson), Dom Cowell (Football referee of some distinction), Chris and Claire Palmer and Pippa Gibbs. Some ungenerous souls did say that the stall was a bit quieter this year (guess who might have been missing), but we will welcome them back next year nevertheless. I am told they know who they are!
Dave Peperell and Simon Gibbs.
As there are no home matches being played this weekend - we'll open the bar from 5pm on Saturday.
Please come along and support your club and watch the FA Cup Final!
As of 9am on Friday 4th May all matches for this coming weekend are confirmed as cancelled except the Saturday 3rd XI match away to Witham.
We'll update the website as soon as possible regarding the 3rd XI match.
Feering May Fayre and KFCC - I am still needing help running the barbecue on Monday 7th May.
If anyone is available to help please contact me - pippagibbs@brinternet.com.
Timing is 2 till 5 but an hour or two help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks - Simon Gibbs
The first day of May has brought another deluge of rain and the club now resembles a duck pond.
There is no training possible today (Wednesday) or first team training on Thursday. At this stage the weekend is still a possibility and we will review again at the end of the week
Many Thanks. Martin Griffiths
We had 30mm last night and I have just inspected the ground with Bryan Page.
There is no way that the ground will be fit for practice either for Weds Evening or Thursday. The chances of playing at the weekend are close to zero unless we get a tropical heatwave between now and Thursday. We will
not be able to start working on the pitches until the surface water has drained off and there are puddles in places I have not seen before.
Bryan is desperate to get a pitch prepared but there is no way we can do it at present. Having cut the outfield down quite well it is now getting long and ragged which is annoying if not downright disastrous.
We will give you all a final decision on Thursday evening but please be prepared for the worst.
Simon Gibbs
Sorry but we are again going to have to cancel training tomorrow, ground and nets waterlogged with more rain forecast. I trust that you will be all out doing some fitness work!
We will let you know about the weekend fixtures as soon as possible.
Rob Morrell, Saturday 1st Team captain
Unfortunately the weather has defeated us again and we will be unable to train tomorrow night Wednesday as the ground is far too wet and nets not useable. We are still hopeful for first team training on Thursday but this may also become a victim of the weather. At this stage however it is still on.
Martin Griffiths
The date of the funeral of Joan Savill is as follows: -
Funeral Service at the United Reformed Church in Kelvedon at 2.15 followed by committal at the Three Counties Crematorium at High Garrett at 3.45 and then afterwards at the Cricket Club on Thursday 26th April.
I believe that it is the wish of the family for family flowers only, but members may wish to make a donation to Farleigh Hospice via Janet Davies, Funeral Director.
Simon Gibbs
Dear Member
It is with sad regret that we have to announce that Joan Saville, our presidents wife, passed away yesterday. Joan was a great supporter of Kelvedon and Feering CC and for many years worked tirelessly supporting the club and her husband Arthur. Our thoughts go out to Arthur and all of the family at this sad time. She will be greatly missed.
Details of the funeral will be circulated in due course.
Chris Leftwich, Chairman KFCC
Dear Member,
The season is now upon us but unfavourable weather is against us. As a result, regretfully, we are cancelling all cricket at the Club this weekend. This means all home fixtures and training is cancelled!!! Hopefully, the weather will change and we can start training and matches next weekend.
Martin Griffiths
Saturday 14th April
Following the fine weather we have been having(!) we are now planning to have a net session on Saturday.
Starting at 2pm this will be open to anyone who will be playing adult cricket this year.
Weekly Evening Training sessions - starting from Wed 18th and Thurs 19th April
Evening training will start next week Wed 18th and Thurs 19th.
Hope to see many of you on Saturday.
Rob Morrell
To all those that turned up to help with the Cricket Force tasks a very big thank you. We did achieve a lot of the jobs that we set ourselves and many of those that were not done on the day have been done subsequently by Vic Forshaw, John Fisher and others. The ground is now looking very tidy and we hope to keep it that way for the rest of the season.
Just to tell you that the railway wagon is now watertight and has even passed the first test of remaining dry during the rainy period we are having. Many thanks especially to Bob James and Russell Ware who took control of the situation and with Martin Pope and many others re-designed the roof to a high spec! Many others got stuck in to the nets/mobile net, emptying the scorehut, bonfire duty etc etc.
All of this was achieved without dirtying Mick Warner's very smart Health and Safety Supervisor's suit which set the day off! There are other jobs which crop up during the year and if anyone wants to assist it is quite rewarding to feel one has achieved a bit towards keeping the club looking the part. Now all we need to do is to play some cricket!!
Simon Gibbs
Dear Club Member,
Believe it or not the cricket season starts next month!!!
Please see below 2012 registration pack. As last year, we will be holding a registration evening. This year it will be 7-9pm Friday 30/3/12. Additionally on the night, I will be there along with other coaches who will be happy to answer any cricket related questions you may have. We kindly request that club members:-
2012 registration pack [zip file - 120KB]
Either: -
1. Turn up on the night with their forms. Or...
2. Post them to Jacci at the address on the membership form.
We would really appreciate your support with this. Otherwise it becomes a nightmare for coaches and selectors having to chase people up.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Jacci, our membership secretary (in cc above) or myself and we will be pleased to help you.
Have a great season!
Martin Griffiths
That time of year comes around very quickly. If any of you have not been down to the club recently you will be surprised at some of the changes that have happened over the winter. Our dedicated band of volunteers has done a lot during the Winter and continues to do a lot all through the year. However a club like ours always has a lot of things to do to keep it looking spick and span and the ravages of the winter (which blew one of the sightscreens over) need to be repaired. We are starting at 9.30 and I think that Graham Pryke (the Essex County Cricket Development Officer) should be there to see how we are getting along.
The jobs that need doing will include jobs that can be done by most ranges of ability and age, including trying to make our railway carriage a bit more weather proof, spreading gravel on the car park, putting a path under the new pedestrian gate, digging a trench to stop mole activity, possibly a bonfire (weather-dependent). If you think you may be able to spare an hour or two please could you send me an e-mail so I have some idea of numbers.
I look forward to seeing you there. We are serving lunch at 1.00 (bangers, rolls, salad and soup) and Vic Forshaw might allow us to have a beer to wash away the budget blues.
Simon Gibbs
Four of our young Petchey award winners went along to the Civic Theatre at Chelmsford with their families for a gala presentation evening on Monday 5th March. The award winners thoroughly enjoyed an evening of entertainment and all received their individual medals which were presented to them on the night.
As there were 4 representatives from Kelvedon and Feering CC the medals were presented in a special slot dedicated to the club. Club Coach, Martin Griffiths, who accompanied his daughter Rhiannon, who was one of the award winners, said it was a fantastic evening. Daughter Rhiannon was so enthused she offered to come on to our steering committee made up of representatives of the younger members, club coach and club chairman to help administer the scheme.

This is just a big thank you to those invisible people who have done such a wonderful job clearing the stones from the Second ground. I had the opportunity to cut the grass yesterday before the rain forecast for this week arrives and hit very few small stones in the process. I am hoping that the outfield is going to be very much better in the coming season. You may have also noticed that the nets have received a bit of attention to improve the run-ups and you may or may not notice the fact that the end hedge has been trimmed with more to go in the coming weeks, weather permitting.
20th November 2011 - Simon Gibbs
Kelvedon and Feering Cricket Club announces it is (again) in the top flight of cricket grounds in Essex. For the first time we entered the Best Kept Cricket Grounds competition with both our grounds. We were runner-up to Brentwood with the Main Ground and were awarded a Gold Standard for the second ground. But in true Bulldog fashion we are not resting on our laurels. Since the end of the cricket season we have dressed out both of the squares and have top-dressed the second ground outfield. We are hoping that the second ground will be even better next year as a result.
Now here is the rub - the topsoil exercise has thrown up more stones. The grass has now come through and when it is reasonably dry it will be possible to pick the stones. I know that many people walk around the village for exercise - could I ask if it would be possible to take a stroll on the second ground and pick up a few stones while one is about it? The areas where the most stones have shown up are between the railway line and the top of the square and they are showing up greener than the rest of the field at the moment. Please put the stones on the road way next to the rail line (if possible towards the hedge end of the ground).
If you are motivated to help us by doing a half hour stint that would be fantastic – just take yourself down there and climb over the fence (carefully please). Do not worry about picking every little pebble, the main ones I want to get rid of are those over 15-20mm in diameter or thickness or length. The weather looks good at the moment and it would really help if we could get this done within the next ten days so I can give it a little cut before the winter sets in.
Simon Gibbs - 9th November 2011
This is just a very brief reminder that the Main pitch is being put to bed on Saturday - starting about 9.30. Many thanks to those that have already responded - I do not need any response to this e-mail. The weather is forecast to be good for Saturday and then a bit of rain next week which is ideal. We had some much-appreciated help doing the Second Square, but the Main Square is twice the size so your help will be very valuable.
Many thanks - Simon Gibbs
Dear Member,
Please see linked below papers concerning the EGM to be held on 26th September 2011 at the clubhouse.
This is a very important meeting to enable the dissolution of the old unincorporated KFCC and the transfer of its assets and constitution to the new KFCC limited by guarantee. Without this transfer we will probably be liable to full rates in the future and will be unable to apply for many grants to help us move the club forward. It will also protect the membership from any liabilities in the future beyond £1.
I understand many members will find it difficult to attend, so a voting form is included which I would appreciate being returned to me by Friday 23rd September by email or post.
We need a 2/3 majority of the voting membership for these proposals to be enacted so please read the documents and send your vote in or attend on the night.
Remember this is necessary to safeguard YOUR club for the future.
Paul Lees, Secretary KFCC.
See Report in East Anglian Dail Times
September 10th 2011 Two Counties Division 5 Kelvedon & Feering 2nds v Bury St Edmunds 3rds- Rye Mill Lane Feering.
Bury St Edmunds get the Shorty treatment.
League and club record fall as 16 year old boy mountain comes of age.
On paper it didn't appear that this late season game would amount to a great deal, both teams were safe in division 5 of the Two Counties for another season and the weather had an early Autumnal feel to it. The events that followed went to prove just what an unpredictable game cricket can be and that in this game you should never assume anything!
Kelvedon batted first on a wicket that was in good shape given the recent weather and the game got off to a quiet and uneventful start. After 10 overs Kelvedon had reached 41-2 with Mick Warner and Ross Burt both falling to Gupta's medium pace. At this point 16 year old Will Shortridge joined veteran number 3 Mal Wilde at the wicket and the game took on an entirely different complexion as Will started to employ the full range of his shots and by 20 overs the total had reached 117-2 a good score but it still didn't signal what was about to follow. Things could have been very different if a catch offered up by Will had been taken when he was on 9, in hindsight all those watching were very glad it wasn't.
With the veteran Wilde playing a typical sheet anchor roll, the last 25 overs went as something of a blur as Shortridge, who had now played himself in looked to up the scoring rate, his first 6 came when he was on 41 and was quickly followed by 2 more as the ball started to fly to all corners of the ground and onto and over the railway line. Will reached his hundred in the 32nd over having faced 72 balls, two overs later he had 130 at which point it felt that every ball would reach the boundary.
The 44th over came and went and the statistics spoke for themselves, Will would face the final over starting on 199 not out, the dependable Wilde who had quietly accumulated was at the non-strikers end 99 not out a lot of milestones were in reach. Thankfully the final over bowled by Stennett didn't disappoint as the first ball cleared the boundary to take Shortridge to 205 a two and a single followed and the ever watchful Wilde secured the single needed for his century, another 6 was to follow for Shortridge and the innings closed with the Kelvedon score at 387-2.
The statistics tell the story, Shortridge faced 123 balls for his 213 not out, hitting 13 sixes and 17 fours and now holds all the clubs batting records. Wilde’s 100 not out came from 101 balls and in total the pair batted together for 158 minutes.
The partnership was an undefeated 346 which looking at the records appears to be the highest partnership for any wicket in the history of the Two counties league.
The 387 total achieved by Kelvedon is the highest total achieved in division 5 and unsurprisingly Will's 213 is the highest individual score ever in the division.
Bury St Edmunds, we're game in the pursuit of the mammoth score with captain Kevin Dobson going down for fast paced 84 out of an all out total of 142. But the game was over long before that – uneventful it wasn't!
Downloada PDF version of the match report.
It has got round to nearly the end of the season again. I hope that everyone has enjoyed the look of the ground and the condition of the pitches. In order to keep them up to scratch we need a bit of help "putting the squares to bed".
The main date that we need help for is the 1st October when we will be putting the main square down. Please could you respond by e-mailing me if you will be able to come and put in some effort between 9am and 2pm on the 1st. I am sure that some of you will remember what to do from previous years, but it is not difficult and generally involves using brawn not brain. Depending on the day there is usually a lot of the younger members in the nets allowing the older generations to spread the soil. We provide sustenance and I am sure we will be very welcome to help Vic get rid of some of the beer stock so he does not have to count it at the end of October!
We will also be working on the second pitch during the week of 12th September and anyone who is free during that week would be very welcome to help.

Martin Griffiths, Club Coach
Dear member,
KFCC has made a very strong start to the 2011 season and attendance to our club training night has been high. In order to improve the coaching we can offer we have decided to move the 2/3rd team/U14 and above coaching night to a Wednesday starting tomorrow!! I know there are some players who were unable to make Thursday nights anyway, so hopefully that will give them the option of coming to training as well.
I am sure this will not suit everyone so if anyone has any issues, please contact me directly. I believe everyone will benefit from this in the long term though. Many Thanks.

Saturday 9th April saw a dedicated group of volunteers do lots of little jobs around the Cricket Grounds to prepare for the new season. The nets were in need of a little TLC which they got even if a lot of people got wet in the process. The ground is now ready for the first match on Saturday 16th April and the clubhouse looks as clean as a new penny. Many thanks to all those that did their bit to make our club a really great place to play cricket.

CricketForce Day - 9th April
We will be doing a concentrated day of work on the ground on the 9th April (CricketForce Day). There are a lot of things going on over that weekend including the training sessions at Thurstable and a lot of other things within the villages, however a few hours of your time would be really appreciated to help get the ground and buildings up to scratch. We will be repainting the railings and the outside of the club as well as making running repairs to the soffits and barge boards and cleaning the gutters of the clubhouse. A merry band of volunteers have already repainted the walls of the clubhouse but there are the benches over the lockers still needing to be done as well as the outside of the scorebox and basically anything that does not move needs painting. This year we are needing to do a lot of repairs to the nets and so we need people with skills that involve knotting and stitching. We also need to clean the surfaces of the nets.
We need a responsible person to get rid of a small pile of rubbish on the second ground bank and any fencing experts would be very welcome. Those of you who appreciate rural smells may fancy turning the compost heap on the main ground. There is also the possibility that we will be installing a coaches hut and painting it.
The start time will be around 9.30 and we hope to keep people busy all day - soup and bread will be served at 1.00 and I am sure that Vic Forshaw would dearly like you to test the quality of the Shepherd and Neame products the he has been ordering up for us.
Please could you let me know if you have any special skills that might be relevant to any of the jobs above - it might mean temporary elevation to the ranks of management, but before you get the idea that a large desk and final salary scheme are on offer this will be a petty officer position (working supervision)!

Pre-Season Training
The season is just over a month away and its time we got some outdoor sessions underway (weather permitting). Therefore I am organising two training sessions at the club on Saturday 19th and 26th March from 10:30-12pm. These sessions will be focusing on general fitness and various technical drills as a gentle warm up before the sessions at Thurstable School. After the session on the 26th we will be holding a players meeting in the clubhouse at 12pm. This will be for Martin, Ed and I share our new ideas with you and to discuss our ambitions/expectations for the upcoming season.
Outdoor sessions at Thurstable School will be on the 2nd and 9th April, from 2-4pm. Those of you who have attended these sessions in previous years will know the drill. For those who haven't - these sessions are mainly focused on fitness drills, fielding practice and various team games.
We hope to see you at all four sessions, or as many as you are able to make. Your attendance at the players meeting will also be greatly appreciated. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any queries.

Players are welcome on 1, 2 or all 3 days..... please contact Rob Morrell to book a place or for more information. Responses by Friday 6th August would be appreciated to give us an idea of numbers and allow us to estimate the number of coaches that will be required for each day.

Jack Petchey Foundation's 10th Anniversary - win an IPOD TOUCH
As part of the Jack Petchey Foundation's tenth anniversary celebrations we are undertaking a survey of youth attitudes - this survey is called "Listen Up". We need your help with this...
We want to know what the young people at Kelvedon and Feering Cricket Club think about a whole range of different subjects including education, work, politics, health, ambitions and hobbies. The survey results will be published in a Jack Petchey Foundation report, "Listen Up", which we will use to make sure that people in positions of influence and power, understand and react to what young people REALLY have to say and think. In this election year, it is more important that young people's voices are heard.
How can young people give their views? All of the young people at Kelvedon and Feering Cricket Club that are aged between 11-25 can complete the "Listen Up" survey by clicking on the following link:
www.surveymonkey.com/s/ListenUp
They can also can access the survey through the "announcements" section of the Jack Petchey Foundation website.
It will take a maximum of ten minutes to complete and when they have submitted their survey they will be invited to enter a prize draw to win an IPOD TOUCH!!!
We really do need your help, so please forward this link to the young people of Kelvedon and Feering Cricket Club - just ten minutes of their time will make a huge difference.
Many thanks - The Jack Petchey Foundation Team

CRICKETFORCE UPDATE - or Essex Stonepick - Saturday 27th March
This is just a very brief reminder that the Great Essex Stonepick is on Saturday on our Second Pitch. We are starting at 9.30 and I think that Graham Pryke (the Essex County Cricket Development Officer) should be there to see how we are getting along. The only tools you need are a big screwdriver and a bucket. Pray for rain before Saturday and a fine day on Saturday to make the job easier. I look forward to seeing you there. We are serving lunch at 1.00 (bangers, rolls, salad and soup) and Vic Forshaw might allow us to have a beer to wash away the budget blues!

Chairman's 25th Anniversary speech
"First of all let me thank everyone for coming today and supporting the club and enjoying the lunch prepared for us by Anne. Today marks a significant milestone in the history of Kelvedon and Feering Cricket Club. Having moved from a pitch that the club had occupied for many a year off London Road, presumably to make way for the A12 improvements, the club is now enjoying a dual celebration: its silver wedding or in other words 25 years on it’s the site in Rye Mill Lane and the opening of its second pitch located just over the road in the adjacent field..." New roller
The Club has acquired another Stothert and Pitt roller to do the rolling on the second square and outfield. It was acquired through the good offices of Lawrence Edwards the pitch adviser and comes from a local club whose ground staff are now being treated to the luxury of a reconditioned Autoroll with hydrostatic drive. Our hard-working team will be getting a bit fitter swinging the handle of the old diesel engine on cold Spring mornings but the machine will do a job for us till we can afford a roller with full stereo and central heating (that is a two cylinder engine between the feet!).
Equipment budget / new changing rooms
We are now putting the finishing touches to our equipment budget for next year and we are including an amount for the materials to fit out the new changing rooms and provide cricketing equipment for next year on the new ground. We will be getting the new ground ready to play on, including building the new changing rooms (making benches for people to rest their weary cricket bags on etc) and putting up pegs to hang the umpires on (in their coats).

Grant for £9.5K
Through the dedicated work of the Chairman, Chris Leftwich, committee member Mike Rayner and Graham Pryke, Cricket Development Officer at Essex County Cricket Club, Kelvedon CCC has been awarded a grant of £9.5K from the Witham Area Committee of Braintree Council to put towards the drawing up of plans for the development of the new pavilion plus costs towards obtaining planning and building consent for the development.
This is excellent news for the Club and hopefully another step towards the completion of this major project.
Gus Hunnybun - hangs his gloves up
Longstanding first team gloveman, Gus Hunnybun, has hung up his league keeping gloves. He will be sadly missed on Saturday cricket but the Club hope to see Gus playing more friendly cricket over the next few years and supporting the Club, as he always has done, with his infectious enthusiasm and determination for many years to come.
A few words from Gus, on his playing days...
"I started my career at King's School Bruton in Somerset, playing for the 1st team with 18 year olds when I was 14. I had 4 seasons and played for Hubbert Doggart's ESCA team (English Schools Cricket Association) and I played in a series of matches at Egars Plough ('The playing fields of Eton'). This series was a selection for the England under 19 tour to India. Unfortunately I was not selected.
I then slipped into local cricket playing for Castle Cary in Somerset.
I dropped out of sport entirely for several years, coming back to play for Bruton and then Beckington.
On moving to this part of the world, I intially played for Colchester, but after a season and a half I moved to Kelvedon, the best move that I ever made.
Kelvedon have made me feel very much part of the club, and I shall always stay with the club, trying to help the younger members and especially the wicket keepers improve.
It is with great sadness that I hang up my gloves for league cricket but look forward to the future."

U15 Girls team win the Lady Taverner's Essex cup - Sunday 22nd June
U15 Girls won the lady Taverner's Essex cup by beating Harold Wood, the current National champions.
The team of Kate Felstead, Lyndsey Cowell, Charlie Clark-Parkinson, Rhiannon Griffiths, Hayley Ramsey, Heather Holmes, Zoë Wager, Louise Johnson. Played brilliantly well, with 2 late substitutions due to illness.
Key performances were Louise and Kate Felstead with both bat and ball. The highlight being the caught and bowled by Lyndsey Cowell of Harold Wood's top player which was hit extremely hard. With the bat Kate Felstead's massive six, "Napier" like, which would have been a six on any ground.
The team then headed to Hertfordshire for the South of England finals. One step from Edgbaston where the finals will be held.
